Quick Help: Babbel supports Ukrainian refugees with language courses

  • Babbel is now making the existing Babbel product available to refugees free of charge

  • Courses in Ukrainian for German, Polish and English learning are being developed

  • These courses and other Babbel-sponsored initiatives are available on the Babbel website here

Babbel, the world's best-selling online language learning platform, knows how important language learning is for refugees. As such, Babbel is offering free access codes to Ukrainian refugees and displaced persons. Refugees with existing knowledge of one of the languages offered by Babbel (e.g. English) can start learning the languages relevant to them, including German, Polish and Italian. In addition, Babbel is currently developing a Ukrainian language offering with target languages in German, Polish and English. Once this is made available, Ukrainian refugees can complete language courses in their native language, making their transition to Germany, Poland and other host countries easier.

"We already recognized how important language is for the lives of refugees in 2015, when Babbel actively supported Syrian refugees in their adjustment to their new communities in Germany," says Arne Schepker, Babbel CEO. “So, in observing the terrible war in Ukraine and the large number of people fleeing, it was not a question of if, but rather, how we could help. Our team is working at an impressive speed on various initiatives, from building language courses to designing products that enable cultural understanding in host communities. I am convinced that in focusing on our strength, we can provide help in the most effective way possible."

In addition to language courses, the Babbel team is developing a multitude of resources, including articles on arriving in Germany and Poland for the Babbel Magazine, a glossary for learning Ukrainian for citizens in host countries, and various projects with partners on the ground. The Berlin company has experience in supporting refugees. During the 2015 influx of refugees into Europe, Babbel worked closely with the Berlin Senate and various other partners to provide Syrian refugees with language learning tools and resources.
