Babbel apps crack the 10 million downloads mark

Berlin 12 June 2013 - The language learning tool Babbel has achieved a record 10 million downloads of its successful apps for mobile language learning. The apps are available in over 190 countries and are especially popular in countries such as Germany, France and the United States. English is the most popular language learned with the Babbel app: The app for learning English represents approximately one third of the apps downloaded. It is followed by the apps for learning Spanish and French.
"We're enormously proud that so many people worldwide have elected for our apps. From the very beginning, Babbel was intended as a cross-platform learning system, and now, after six years, the time is ripe for this. The number of Babbel's mobile users will soon surpass that of web users. This is a general trend that ties in perfectly with our product concept," says Markus Witte, CEO of Babbel.

All users have the option to learn languages flexibly and on-the-go in addition to the online system. The Berlin-based company released the first vocabulary trainers with an integrated voice recognition system and review manager as an app for the iPhone in April 2011 and then for the iPad. The Babbel iPad app topped the international educational download charts in 14 countries. It has been possible to install the complete range of courses with over 6,000 hours of study material on the iPad since the end of 2012.
Babbel started offering apps for 11 languages for Android devices in March 2012. Since then, Babbel has topped the Google Play charts in the area of education in several European countries. The Windows 8 app for tablet and PC followed a month later and is now the most successful educational app in the German Windows Store. Babbel presented its new apps for smartphones running Windows Phone 8 in the presence of the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, when it received the Innovative 4 Society Award from Microsoft at this year's CeBIT in March.
