Currently, you can learn the following languages:
Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish.

Please note that the Writing courses are not available on the mobile apps.

Registration with Babbel is completely free of charge and the first lesson in every course, in every language, is free to try.

We only charge if you want full access to the courses in your learning language, but all other parts of Babbel are free to use.

If you have any questions:

Payment of the subscription fee gives access to your chosen language on and via any of our apps. When you start a subscription on, you will never pay more than the rate you have chosen for as long as that subscription remains active.

With the Babbel Android app, the monthly and yearly payment plans are available via the Google Play Store.

With the Babbel iOS apps in-app purchases are also possible. Different prices and conditions may apply in these cases.

1. If you subscribe via, you can pay using a credit card (Mastercard, Visa, American Express) or via PayPal. Some debit cards are also accepted.
For users with a German bank account, payment by direct debit is possible and, if you're based in the Netherlands, the option to pay via Ideal is also available.

Please note that American Express or PayPal options are not available if you are based in Brazil.

2. If you subscribe via one of our apps, in-app purchases are available through the Apple App Store or through the Google Play Store.

If you subscribe, you will be charged, in advance, on a monthly, three-monthly, six-monthly or yearly basis according to the payment plan you
have chosen. The recurring payments will be charged automatically until you decide to cancel. Babbel will never charge you unless you voluntarily enter your payment details on our payment page.

Payments made via the Apple App Store or Google Play Store will be handled directly by Apple or Google play.

1. If you subscribe via, you can cancel a subscription by sending us a short message in any of the following ways:

You should receive confirmation of the cancellation within 48 hours, but let us know if you don't.

2. If you subscribe via the Apple App Store, go to the App Store on your device, tap "Featured" and scroll down to your Apple ID at the bottom of the page. Open your Apple ID, and choose "View Apple ID". You'll find the Babbel payment under "Manage App Subscriptions" and will see the option to turn "Auto-Renewal" off.

3. If you pay via the Google Play Store, open the Google Play Store App, then go to "My Apps - Subscriptions" then press cancel. You will then be asked to confirm your subscription cancellation. Full details relating to Google Play cancellations can be also found here :

Cancelling a subscription with Google Play

Please be aware that all subscriptions are automatically renewed until we, Apple or Google receive notice of cancellation, so it's important to cancel before the date when the next payment is due. You will, of course, continue to have access to your courses until the period already paid for expires.

As Babbel subscriptions are automatically renewed, it's important to cancel BEFORE the date when a payment is due.
You can cancel any time in between the date of the purchase and up until one day before the next renewal. Please note that it can take us a few days to process cancellations, so if you know you want to cancel, it's best to let us know as soon as possible.

You will continue to have access to your courses until the period already paid for expires.

1. If you made the payment via, the date when your subscription expires will be stated in the email you'll receive confirming the cancellation. It will also be found on the "Account information" page of your Babbel profile.

2. If you made a payment via the Apple App Store, the date when your subscription expires can be found by going to the App Store on your device, tapping "Featured" and scrolling down to your Apple ID at the bottom of the page. Open your Apple ID, and choose "View Account". A Babbel subscription will be shown with any others you might have.You will continue to have access to your courses until the period already paid for expires.

3. If you made the payment via the Google Play Store, the end date of your subscription will show in "My Apps - Subscriptions". It will also be stated in the cancellation confirmation email you'll receive from Google.

Details can be found on the "Account information" page of your Babbel profile on Log in to the site on a computer, click on your user name at top right, select "Profile and settings" then "Account Information".

If you subscribed via, invoices can be downloaded from the "Account information" page of your Babbel profile. Note that the name shown on an invoice will correspond with what you entered in the First Name and Last Name fields of your Babbel profile and cannot be changed after a purchase has been made. It's also important to note that your postal address is unknown to us, is not part of the contract and cannot not be printed on the invoice.

If you subscribed via the Apple App Store, invoices will be sent to the email address connected to the Apple account you used when making the purchase.

Our longer payment plans offer better value for your money. If you would like to change your payment plan and have subscribed via, log in to Babbel then use the following link to access our prices page. You can then sign up under a new plan:


Your existing subscription will be automatically cancelled and any time remaining on it added on to the first payment period of the new subscription. The new subscription details will be displayed on the "Account information" page of your Babbel profile.

If you subscribed via the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store, simply cancel your subscription (see "How can I cancel a subscription?") and re-subscribe under the new payment plan when the existing subscription expires.

Occasionally we might have offers for annual subscriptions at an even cheaper rate.
PLEASE NOTE: These can only be bought directly from - not via an in-app purchase. If you choose to upgrade to one of these and already have a subscription with us, it will work the same way as changing a payment plan: the original subscription will be automatically cancelled and the time already paid for added on to the first payment period of the new subscription. What's more, the extra time is rounded up to a complete month.
Here's an example:
You currently have a three-monthly subscription and the next payment is due in five weeks time.
You upgrade to an annual subscription.
We will convert the five weeks already paid for into two months and add these on to the first payment period of the new subscription.

If your original subscription was bought via the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store, it's very important that you cancel this to avoid any further charges.

Payment transactions on adhere to the highest security standards. The server connection and the data-processing are protected with up-to-date encryption methods.


If you have not already registered with Babbel, you first need to do so.
If you are already registered with Babbel:

4. On the next page you may have the option to upgrade to an all-languages subscription. PLEASE NOTE, though you will be offered the first payment for this at a reduced price, be aware that the upgrade is a regular Babbel subscription and, after the first payment period has expired, will be automatically renewed at our standard rate until we receive notice of cancellation. Full details will be sent to the email address you used to register with us. If you don't want to upgrade, just click on 'Just French' (or whichever language you have chosen). You will then be taken to your Babbel homepage and can start to learn immediately.

Babbel voucher codes are case sensitive: if your code includes capital letters, you need to enter exactly as displayed.
If you are copying & pasting the code, make sure that you have not accidentally included a space at the beginning or end – this will mean
that the code is not accepted.
It's also important to note that all vouchers have limited validity. If your voucher has expired, you'll see a message telling you this and will no longer be able to use that voucher.
If you still have problems, write to our address and forward us the voucher you received.

Many vouchers offer access for a limited period of time and no direct payment is made to Babbel. These vouchers will expire automatically and you do not need to cancel. There are, however, cases when you do need to cancel:

Upgrades to subscriptions
When you redeem most vouchers, you will be offered the chance to upgrade to an all-languages subscription. If you take advantage of this, payment is made directly to Babbel and the subscription WILL automatically renew until you decide to cancel. It's important to be aware of this as you may be offered the upgrade at a cheaper initial price. Full details will be sent to you by email after you have made the payment.

Discount vouchers
Some vouchers offer you a reduced price on standard Babbel subscriptions. With these vouchers, you will make a payment directly to Babbel after the voucher has been redeemed. Again, the subscription WILL automatically renew until you decide to cancel.

If you're using a one-language app, just log in and tap "Courses" in the app's menu.

If you're using a multi-language app, select the language you want to learn to access the courses in the app's menu.

Please note that the writing courses are not available on any mobile apps.

Business English, Business German and In-depth courses are only available at or via our iOS app.


A Babbel subscription gives you access to all courses in your chosen language. You can change course whenever you like.
At, the different courses can be accessed via "Courses" in the main menu - just choose a new one and click on "Set as course". The new course will then be the one that shows on your Babbel homepage.

With an Android or iOS app, you'll find "Courses" in the app's menu

You are able to repeat any course or lesson as often as you like.

To repeat a lesson, use the progress bar in the active course window on your Babbel homepage: the orange sections indicate lessons already accessed. Click on the relevant section and then click "Start".
To repeat an already completed course, select the course from "Courses" at the top of your Babbel homepage and then work through the individual lessons.

With an Android or iOS app, just select the course you want from "Courses" in the app's menu and select the lessons you want to repeat.

When you first access a lesson that features speech recognition, you will be asked whether you want to use the tool or not. If you choose to do so, you will be guided through the following procedure:
1. You will first see the message "Allow access to your microphone".
2. Beneath you will see a small message asking you to allow to access your computer. You should select "Allow" and "Remember" then "Close".
3. Click on "Continue" and you will now see a screen asking you to "Choose which microphone to use". Choose from the options that appear for your computer and, when a checkmark appears, click "Continue".
4. Click on "Continue" and you will now be able to "Adjust microphone sensitivity" – simply follow the instructions here.
5. Speech recognition is now ready to use and you need only select "Continue" to start the lesson.
If an appropriate version of Adobe Flash Player is not installed on your computer (version 10.3 or above), you will see a message informing you of this and a link where it can be downloaded free of charge. Please note that after downloading Flash Player, you will need to log out of Babbel and close your browser before the new version is installed.

When you first log in to an iOS app, you will the following message – "Babbel would like to Access the Microphone". Choose "Allow" and speech recognition will be ready to use.
If you choose "Don't allow", you will not be able to use the speech recognition feature of the app but, if you change your mind, this can be easily fixed. Just tap on your device's "Settings" icon, choose "Privacy", "Microphone" then set the slider next to the the Babbel App icon to green.

You'll find the option to adjust the microphone sensitivity in the app's settings.

When you log in to the app, the microphone will be set up automatically. You'll find the option to adjust the microphone sensitivity in the app's settings.

The speech recognition measures how well your pronunciation matches that of the audio track you are hearing.

If it's a good match, a green check mark will appear in the microphone icon and the system will move on to the next vocab item. If it's not a good match, the microphone icon will shake. You'll have the chance to try five times before the system moves on to the next item.

On an iOS or Android app

Tap the speaker icon to hear the audio track then speak when the microphone icon appears. If your pronunciation is a good match, the vocab item will turn green and the app will move on to the next item. If it's not a good match, the vocab item will shake and turn red. You'll have to try at least one more time before seeing the option to skip to the next item – an arrow at bottom right.

The vocabulary courses can be found in the "Words and Sentences" category. There are more than 3000 words for each of the following learning languages:
English, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish.

The following learning languages have more than 2000 words:
Danish, Dutch, Indonesian, Norwegian, Polish and Turkish.

Our new Russian vocabulary courses currently have 500 words. There are more on the way – watch this space!

You can change your learning language or download a different app at any time, but standard subscription fees give access to one language only. You can, of course, learn more than one language but this would mean paying an additional subscription fee for each additional language.

When you've logged in to Babbel, your current learning language is indicated by the flag at top right of your Babbel homepage. Click on that flag and a drop-down menu will appear with the option to either change or add a new learning language.
When a language has already been added, it will also appear in the languages list under You're learning on your Babbel homepage. You'll see the option to Switch there, if ever you want to change to one of those languages.

There is currently an app for every language except Danish, Norwegian & Russian. If you want to try another language, just download the relevant app:

English is the only language on that has monolingual courses (note that these are not available in any of our apps). This means that you are able to learn English when English is also set as your interface language. However, you will have access to a far greater range of English courses if you choose one of our other languages as the interface language.

To reset your interface language, go to "Settings" in your Babbel profile where the changes can be made. The "Reference Language" you choose will be the interface language. Don't forget to click on "Save" before exiting the "Settings" page. Having followed this procedure, the complete range of English courses will become available to you.

Even if you don't speak one of our other languages, the benefits of choosing one as the interface language far outweigh the disadvantages simply because of the number of English courses that will then become available to you. You will find that the layout of Babbel remains the same and you shouldn't have any problems navigating within the site. Much of our material is image-based and the meaning will be clear to you despite not understanding the interface language. Though the titles of courses will be in the interface language, you will find that most courses also include a title or description in English.

You can get a certificate for every course you complete but please note that these can only be accessed from, not from our apps.

In the "Courses" menu on the website you'll see the option to download a certificate next to each course that's been completed. Simply click on the icon to get the certificate. You can print it or save it as you would any web page. The certificate includes information about the content and the level of the course and proves what you’ve learned with Babbel.

The name that is shown on a Babbel certificate corresponds with what you have entered in the "First Name" and "Last Name" fields of your Babbel profle. To change this, log in to, click on your screen name at top right then go to "Profile and settings". Don't forget to click on "Save" after making your changes.


Most words and phrases that you’ve learned with Babbel will be stored in your personal vocabulary list on Log in to on a computer and click on "Vocabulary" in the menu at the top of your Babbel homepage to access the list for your current learning language. This list is linked to your Review Manager, but please note, although you are able to use the Review Manager in a Babbel App, your actual vocabulary list can only be accessed when logging in via the web at on a computer.

Learning that sticks
The Babbel Review Manager is available to use at and via all Babbel apps. It automatically reminds you when words and phrases are due for review based on the proven method of "spaced repetition". Review intervals are determined individually for each word or phrase based on how often it has been reviewed and how often you get it right. In order to really commit vocabulary to your long-term memory, you need to practice often and at appropriately spaced intervals. We recommend using the Review Manager regularly to consolidate what you've already learned within the courses.

Vocabulary levels
Every word or phrase in your vocabulary list on is assigned to one of six knowledge levels. Each time one is reviewed correctly, it moves up a level. Likewise, if you get it wrong, it moves down a level. This means words and phrases that come easily to you will end up at a higher level and, consequently, need to be reviewed less. Those you have more difficulty with, on the other hand, will have to be reviewed more often until they have been truly committed to memory.

Longer intervals after every review
For each level a word or phrase moves up, the longer the interval before it will need to be reviewed again. At the beginning – or when you’ve made a mistake – the interval is one day. On the second level up, it’s four days, then seven, then 14, and then 60 days. Once a word reaches the sixth level, it will be six months before it is due for review again.
But here’s the good news: you don’t need to worry about how it all works! The Review Manager reminds you automatically to review, and knows exactly what vocabulary to present to you for optimal learning.

Access your personal vocabulary list by logging in to on a computer, then click on the X that appears next to each word or phrase at far right.
In the drop-down menu under "More", you will also see the option to "Delete all". Be aware that if you do this, your stored vocabulary will be permanently lost.

Yes, this is possible via your vocabulary list. Log in to on a computer and click the "Vocabulary" tab at the top of the page to open your vocabulary list. The filter option at top left of the list allows you to sort according to theme or knowledge level. You will then have the option to "Review these items" in the drop-down menu under "More".
You are also able to manage the frequency of review by moving words or phrases to different knowledge levels. To do this, simply click on the knowledge level you would like to assign to each vocabulary item.

This is possible if you access your vocabulary list at on a computer where you have the option to create a personalized vocabulary list:
1/ Click on "Create personalized list" on your vocabulary page.
2/ Give your list a title then click on "Create".

Please note that it is NOT possible to delete the list once it has been created.

After having done this you will see the option to "Add a word" when you access the list. Using this allows you to type in your own words and phrases. Incidentally, if what you type already exists on Babbel, any matches will appear and you need only click on them to add them to your list.

Please note that you are able to delete individual vocabulary items from a personalized list.

Spoken review is an extra option available only at It allows you to carry out a review session by speaking rather than typing your answers and is a great way to work on your pronunciation.
To use Spoken review, access your vocabulary list via on a computer. When you've opened your vocabulary list, Spoken review can be found in the drop-down menu under "More".


This is the language of your Babbel interface. All menus, instructions, explanations and translations will appear in that language.
Babbel is currently available in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish or Swedish.

On you can change your reference language at any time on the "Settings" page of your Babbel Profile. Don't forget to click on "Save" after you've made the change.

Within an app, just open the app's menu, select "Settings" then change the "Display language". runs on all modern computers with a current internet browser. Minimum requirements are:

  • Computer and Processor: Display: 1024x768 or higher resolution monitor, 1GHz Processor, 1GB RAM
  • Operating System: Windows, Mac OS X or Linux

  • Javascript must be enabled

It is not necessary to install any special software to use – everything runs directly in your internet browser.
